Portland, Maine is number 12 on Frommer's Top Travel Destinations for 2007
Portland is an old seacoast town and one of the few working waterfronts left in the United States. It is perched on a peninsula, jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay. Historic architecture blends gracefully with the new as you walk through its cobblestone streets of the restored Old Port district. The metropolitan hub of Maine’s south coast region, it is a progressive, lively city where one can experience all the cultural opportunities of a larger city on a smaller scale. The city supports a vibrant community of visual and performing artists plus a changing array of exhibits, festivals, concerts and has become well known as an antique shoppers dream.
Accommodations
Our accommodations for the week will be at the Higgins Beach Inn, in Scarborough, just steps away from the ocean. Higgins Beach, a small seaside community off the beaten path, boasts a stretch of fine white sand, extending across the beachfront and curling around “the spit” which borders the Spurwink River. Take an early morning stroll and hunt for sand dollars. Breakfast is served each morning in the Inn’s restaurant. All bedrooms have private baths..
Tennis
There will be 5 mornings of tennis, Monday through Friday on the courts of Grand Slam Tennis in Portland. After a warm up, participants will be divided into groups by ability. Each day, a different stroke will be highlighted and there will be ample time for round robins. At the end of the week, there will be round robins with members of the club.
Instructors
The head pro of Grand Slam Tennis, Wayne St. Peter has taught for the past 20 years at the University of Southern Maine and various high schools in the Greater Portland area. Wayne, a teaching professional at the Portland Athletic Club, has achieved the teaching level of Pro 4, one of the highest levels of instruction in Maine. Wayne and his assistants will be working with you throughout the week.
